Why Are Most Mine Workers Men?
Mining has long been one of the most male-dominated industries in the world. According to the International Labour Organization (ILO), women account for less than 20% of the global mining workforce, meaning that more than 80% of mine workers are men (International Labour Organization, 2022).
This gender imbalance has developed over many decades. Historically, mining work often involved physically demanding tasks, hazardous working conditions, and remote locations. In many countries, social norms and legal restrictions also limited women's participation in the mining industry. These historical factors have contributed to a workforce that remains predominantly male today (International Labour Organization, 2021).
The mining industry is gradually changing. Advances in automation, digital technologies, and remote operations have transformed many mining jobs, creating new career opportunities that require technical knowledge, problem-solving, and digital skills. As a result, many mining companies are working to increase gender diversity by improving recruitment practices, workplace policies, and career development opportunities for women (International Labour Organization, 2022).
Despite this progress, women continue to be underrepresented across many areas of the mining sector, particularly in operational and leadership positions. The International Labour Organization highlights that improving gender equality is important for building a more inclusive and sustainable mining industry that can meet future workforce demands (International Labour Organization, 2021).
Although mining remains a profession where men make up the majority of workers, the industry is evolving. Increasing opportunities for women is becoming an important priority for many organisations, helping to create a workforce that better reflects the skills and talent available across society.
